Nearly Nola

My husbands family seems to generate boys. Kris is one of three boys, we have three boys and his brothers each have a boy. That is about to change though with the arrival of dear little Nola in October. Of course this new arrival is creating some excitement amongst our little clan and I was giddy with the prospect of making something for the first Kelso girl in some time.

So I started on some little Mini Mary Janes and they just weren’t saying Nola to me. I liked the fabric and color and everything about them really, but Nola needed something brighter, something bolder, something that isn’t exactly typical.

I continued working on the shoes…there are lots of little ladies around here that need their feet shod in pretty little fabric shoes…but I kept my eye out for a more Nola driven fabric.

One day at Joann’s I was at the cutting table and saw two bolts of fabric behind the counter that I had to have for Nola. I bought just enough for a pair of shoes and was on my way. When I got home however I realized the pattern on the piece that first caught my eye was too large for the shoes. So I schemed and schemed until I had a plan (I wasn’t working with a lot of fabric so I had to be quite creative), created a pattern, found some coordinating scraps, buttons and snaps and stitched up a jumper and coordinating pair of Mary Janes for Nola. It all came out about a 3 mo. size and will be lovely for Fall…even in Florida I think. I found some tights and an undershirt to go with it and used the scraps to make the attached card, plus one for mama to send out if she wants to. And now that I have received word that the package has arrived and Nola’s mama is pleased, I will post pictures here:

You will recognize the owls and apples as the inspiration for my Autumn Mary Mary Stationery cards I’m sure. These polka-dot Mini Mary Janes are quite possibly my favorites so far. I went back to Joann’s and got some more of this fabric, but the owls were all gone. I’ll be cutting out some more leaves and maybe another pair of shoes as well.

  1. A GIRL! That does cause a stir in his family, I bet! 🙂 Beautiful baby gift! I have been lucky enough to receive a few of your amazing Welcome to Our World prezzies, and they are treasures… I’m sure Nola and her mom and dad will enjoy it until it’s outgrown and then will likely cherish it afterward, too, as they remember just how tiny their little bundle of joy once was! What a sweet auntie you are!

  3. Katrina – I’ve actually been working on some. Trying to create something a little simpler that I can produce a little faster possibly. When I finish this current pair, I’ll show you and see if it’s what you’re thinking of.

  4. Mary these are just beautiful! I am so incredibly excited to get my hands on Nola Penelope! I wish i could come up to Nashville too but its a bit too much for me, and too close to the birth! I will just look forward to Thanksgiving week.

  5. Beautiful! I cannot wait until Annabel gets to wear her little pair of yellow mary jane’s you made her. Do you make things to sell? I would definitely buy from you.

  6. Lauren – I have not yet tried to sell any of these type items. I am selling the stationery at marymarystationery.com through Etsy. I had a lot of fun with this and may consider doing more of it. If I get anything up on Etsy like this, I’ll let you know. 🙂

  7. You impress me beyond words. I love that dress and shoes combo. What a lucky little baby to get such a cute outfit!!!! Looks like a Gymboree set.

  8. What a beautiful outfit and shoes, something Jessica would definitely love. It will look beautiful on my precious granddaughter! Jessica is blessed to have two godly sister-in-laws and I am very thankful she is in the Kelso family!
