Holding Back

Is it Friday already? How did that happen?

I decided to update Ivan’s blog this morning and with such a character on my mind I felt it appropriate to dedicate this week’s limerick to my middle boy.

Young Ivan with strong furrowed brow,
Would laugh if he’d ever learned how.
He can chuckle and smirk,
But his giggles still lurk,
Holding back till his hurts take a bow.

Now this is not a true reflection of Ivan’s daily character but it is something I’ve seen in him. He will not allow me to tickle his troubles away as Owen and Aron will. He holds true to his misfortunes until they are sufficiently resolved. It is not so much a bitterness that holds him as it is a decided conviction that right must win over wrong. He is, like his mother has often been, a fierce proponent for fairness. There is a good and righteous bit of character here that I do not wish to wipe away with a cold reminder that life is not fair. However, the adage is true, and I hope to enforce His trust in God’s righteousness and sovereignty in order to best prepare him for life’s awkward and unbalanced dealings. When he does let go of the clouded expressions, his smile is pure sunshine.

This evening begins the Ladies Spring Seminar at church. I will be performing a monologue tonight and I am only nervous about it if I think about my possible failure. When I look at the appropriate and timely way each facet of the program has been put together, I can remain confident that God will sustain and fulfill through me and I am more of a failure if I succeed on my own than if I blunder within His anointing. Still, I must take more time today to rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. God is able to do exceeding abundantly and I am able to prepare.

I will be up bright and early tomorrow to return to the church for the second half of the seminar. I am sure by tomorrow afternoon I will be in need of some rest. This week has seen the landing place for many things it seems, and I am so glad that it will culminate with this seminar. I think, though physically wearying, it will be very refreshing in all other aspects.

  1. I can understand where you and Ivan are coming from. He is such a sweet little guy. I hope and pray the monologue goes well this evening. Like you spoke of, if you do it with God’s help, it will be a success in the way He wants. I hope you’re refreshed physically as the rest is refreshed too.

  2. Oh, I adore it. And I adore that sense of justice in a boy. My son has it too – and I have struggled much the same way in parenting it. I don’t want to parent that right out of him! So I try to think of him as a superhero instead. Fighting for truth, justice and…whatever else seems amiss.
