Kitchen Silhouettes

Here’s what I did with Reubmommy’s canvas. I saw a painting I liked with an orange background and a white silhouette of a spiky flower. Very simple, very plain but clean and cute. So I thought…why not take my canvas and do a silhouette of my whisk. I like whisks…they just look cool. When I got to thinking about it though I decided to do my teapot instead because until I am a little more handy with the paintbrush I think my whisk would turn out pretty chunky and messy looking. I do still want to paint it though, I’m just going to practice on some simpler subjects first. So I’ve made the teapot with a green background…oh the green…I was going for a little lighter more apple green, but I need practice mixing colors too.

I used to do this in high school all the time. But that was in a classroom with an endless supply of paint and brushes and pallets. The acrylic paint came in gallon jugs with big pump dispensers on top. I had no idea how nice I had it. I was in better practice and in fact I remember all the paint mixing exercises we used to do in order to get good at creating the colors we wanted. I should probably do them again…Mr. Wolfe’s famous “neato keeno color chart” took a few days to do, but it was very handy once it was completed.

I’m not taking up painting as it were, I just thought it would be fun to make a series of paintings like this. I have several more silhouettes in mind and will do different background colors with each one. Then…I’ll hang them somewhere in my kitchen…if I like them.

Oh…and lest you think me more talented than I am I will tell you my technique. I took that first photo of the teapot, sized it just right, printed it out, cut it out and traced it onto the canvas. Yes, anyone can be a silhouette artist…just pick a subject. Your daughters favorite doll with a bright pink background. Your gardening tools could be cute. I thought about doing scissors and other sewing tools for a mod sewing room. A clothespin for your laundry room, a flower of course, a spiky heeled shoe for her side of the bedroom and a manly loafer for his. Holiday themes…a simple glass ornament with a red or green background, a holly leaf etc…so many options…so few walls.

  1. So cute! And seriously you could have read my mind. I have a bunch of things planned for different colored backgrounds. I can’t wait to see what you come up with.

  2. I like the silhoutte as well as the other ideas. I live far enough away that I could steal your ideas and no one would ever be the wiser:)

Thanks for the Christmas card. It feels good to be loved enough to be worth two stamps!

  3. Anna Maria Horner (a Nashville designer) did something similar to this for Martha Stewart’s show. Your version suits you to a T. Well done!

  4. I love it. What a clever, creative, and yet oh so simple idea. I’ll have to steal it sometime when I get inspired!

  5. I absolutely love the green, even though you were going for something else. I think it’s refreshing and bright!
