I’m busy at home today. At least most of the day. I am making dinner for my dear friend Amber who just had a baby. She is recovering so quickly (cause she is amazing and takes super good care of herself) she probably doesn’t even need a meal, but what does need have to do with it?
I asked her if she has any requests and she replied that David, her husband, asked for “something Amish.” So I pulled a recipe for a chicken and broccoli casserole out of my “Amish and Mennonite” cookbook, I’m baking bread and I’m gonna throw in a pie too. Shoo fly or peanut butter, I haven’t decided yet. 🙂 I’ve been making a lot of peanut butter pies lately. There just seems to be lots of reasons to do it. Church potluck, sisters visiting, baby’s being born etc. etc. I promise I’m not eating them all myself. Or maybe I should make Reubmommy’s Velvet Lunch Cake. Decisions, decisions.
I’m also planning a big dinner on Monday night. I’ve got tables borrowed from my sweet neighbor, Bobbie Jo, so that I can set everyone up on the deck and we can all 18 sit at one table. I don’t have chairs yet, but I’ll get there.
In that process and planning I decided to make place markers for everyone…just sounded fun…so I made pin wheels to stick into each persons corn bread muffin. I have lots of other plans but if that’s all I actually get done, I’ll be pretty proud of myself. I just finished these this morning. I adore little itty bitty wooden clothespins.
And the bread is rising as I type. A view of things to come.
My mouth is watering for dinner now 🙂 18 people for dinner on your deck sounds like so much fun and your pinwheel place cards are perfectly “Mary”. I hope the heat subsides before your dinner party. Or maybe the heat is part of your plan to keep guests from overstaying their welcome? 🙂
Love it! I just pinned some pretty pinwheels on my Pinterest board although I kind of doubt that I’ll ever actually make them. Are those paper or fabric? I couldn’t really tell. They’re very pretty 🙂
Oh how I love the pinwheel place cards! You have given me a great idea for Nola’s first birthday party 🙂 I wish you lived around here so I could experience some of your Amish and Mennonite cooking!
Wow, Mary. Looks like fun. Great job on the pinwheels! wish I could taste the bread!
What’s not to love about this post?!
Dessert: my vote is Velvet Lunch Cake (is that the one you put the brown sugar icing stuff on?)
I love these pinwheels! One of my best buddies just made similar tiny pinwheels for our little Anglo-American 4th of July celebration. I wish I could eat some of your Amish food. 🙂
Amber – I hope it lives up to expectation.
Amy – They are paper. I realized too late that I needed paper with pattern on both sides and had to improvise.
Jessica – You NEED to visit again.
Mom – So do you. 🙂
Tisra – Velvet Lunch Cake it is and yes it is the cake with the brown sugar icing.
Erin – The pinwheels were fun to make and when was the last time you were in Nashville for Amish food? Kristy’s wedding? You might as well visit too.
Oh heavens! It all sounds so wonderful! That’s the very best kind of busy – the kind that is in the kitchen, making wonderful things to share with dear ones 🙂 I love your pinwheels. We all know by now that I’m in a pinwheel phase – LOL!
Yes, I remembered and knew you would appreciate them. There is something so pretty and whimsical about them. I may decide to be in a pinwheel phase too. You never know.
