Because I’m Obviously Not Busy Enough…

I thought of a new project this morning.

I was thinking of my grandmother and all the quilts she has produced over the years. Just the ones she has made for each grandchild would be astounding to see. I thought it would be really neat to see them all together. The colors and designs all side by side would make a lovely picture. That is not a likely scenario but it led me to a more achievable goal. What if some of us grand-kids worked together to collect high quality photos of the quilts she has produced for each of us. A collection of these quilt photos in a book would be a wonderful keepsake and probably a cherished gift for our parents. I e-mailed my cousin Mark (he’s into stuff like this) right away and he is supportive of the idea so I’m going to get started. I need to make a list of cousins and figure out where they all are, send a letter, coordinate a photo shoot and begin the collection. This will probably take a long time, but I think it will be worth it.

There are 30 of us grand-kids and we live from one side of the country (I think Lila is in Pennsylvania) to the other (Verne is in California). So it’s not going to be easy. There are some here in Tennessee that I would love to see again anyway and I’m sure they would enjoy the project, there are still a lot in Michigan so Mark will probably be able to photograph a lot of those and we’ll just have to figure out how to handle the others.

In a perfect world I would just hit the road and visit all of them as I collect photos, but that is an expense I can’t quite justify right now. If I had a really compelling story to write with this and a publisher to back me up I might be able to do that. Oh dear…how did Alta get involved in this?

  1. Oh, Mary! Alta or not, I think this is one of the loveliest ideas I’ve ever heard! And you can be sure that I would buy such a book, had you a publisher to back you up. I’m sure you’d have no problem contriving a compelling story. As it is, if it winds up only in the hands of family, I dearly hope I can have a peek at your copy some day.

  2. I think this is a fabulous idea. You seem very realistic as far as how long it could take and what it entails, so the likelihood of having your hopes dashed is probably small.

I’d love to see it too. I really love quilts.

  3. What a fabulous idea. You can make a hard bound photo book from any of the photo sites so you have something more permanent and it allows the family members to order a copy for themselves as a keepsake if they so wish. Plus you have the option of doing full bleed pages that way. I’m all about full bleed in print. You could do the quilt on one page and a picture of the recipient on the facing page. Maybe a little story with each too. So many options. Such a GREAT GREAT idea and a wonderful family keepsake for everyone. I bet your creative noggen is swimming with ideas on this project. Can’t wait to see this progress.
