Bunk Beds

The boy’s bunk beds arrived at the store on our date night last Thursday. I got a call on my cell phone announcing their arrival. I quickly made phone calls to the warehouse and delivery service to best weigh cost, time and convenience regarding getting them home. It was decided that we would take the less convenient but not completely free course, of setting everything up ourselves if we could get them delivered to our garage the next day.

They were in the middle of the garage floor when Kris got home (I was a good girl and did not bring the boxes in myself…I was tempted though…I hate feeling handicapped in this way). We got them upstairs after the boys went to bed and Kris put them together the next morning. It took a while and understandably so. they are big, strong and solid. I love, love, love the way they look as well. My one disappointment was the tri-bunk support piece on the end is one solid piece, which means it can never be a twin bed on it’s own. I’m not sure if it was this way in the store or not. I did look at a picture that made me think it was two separate pieces so I think I’m going to give them a call and see what I can find out. The other two beds are completely fine to take apart and use as separate beds. I’m very happy with them regardless and the boys are enjoying them. Owen has said numerous times, “I like my bunk beds.”

Ivan has had a little trouble going to bed at night, I think being so deeply enclosed by the bed overhead and the corner he’s in is a little stifling and overwhelming for him. It’s very dark in comparison to his crib. He’s doing better each night though, and we’ve had only one incident with him actually climbing out of his bed after putting him down. I did find him asleep on the floor in front of our bedroom door one morning but Owen was there with him and told me they had both gotten up when the sun woke up.

I really like their room now, more than ever. I still have a few plans that I have yet to realize in there but I’m more excited by those plans than ever because the beds really make a nice warm focus in the room. The dressers and some of the decor had to be moved around but there is a fullness in there that I enjoy being around. Once we have a chair (one of my exciting plans) in there I think I’ll never want to leave.

I’m including pictures that show as much as I can. I need a wide angle lens to get the whole thing at once. I was standing in the doorway holding the camera back against the wall clicking and hoping it would show what I wanted. I got most of it. The corner with the window is where I would like to put a chair. I have an old chair that was my grandparent’s and needs to be refinished. I got an estimate on Monday and we may be able to do it soon. It would require a little upholstering as well so I may wait until I know we can get the whole thing done before starting on a portion of the project.

  1. It looks so complete and well designed even though it has been created in stages (like some bits being old, and some new, and some being from Owen’s original white nursery…). You’d never know it! Well done, Mary.

  2. i love them!! i think they look awesome! i am going to show my boys this pic later and see what they say…i guarantee at least one of them is going to suggest a sleep over at owen’s house! ha!
i would have come over and carried boxes upstairs for you! i totally understand how you hate feeling handicapped or trapped and not able to do what you want, but it will end soon enough!
