Everyday Life

What if…

What if I opened up a little quilting store and I sold calicos and muslins, threads and thimbles, needles and scissors, cutting boards, patterns, books and all sorts of fun gadgets large and small? Quilting frames would be a high dollar item and of course the occasional quilt…hand-made and personal…machine stitching would only be an option for those in a big fat hurry.

What if I rented a small building close to home and spent my days there quilting with my children right there at my feet? And my friends would stop in when they needed to sit down and rest with a bit of hand work of their own…I wouldn’t be a quilt snob…my comfy chairs would welcome anyone who wanted to work quietly and comfortably and I’d offer them hot tea or coffee with a bit of sugar and a drop of real cream.

What if the building were big enough to have a play room for our kids and the walls were padded so they couldn’t kill themselves and the toys were scrubbed down with antibacterial cleaners every day so they wouldn’t infect one another so quickly?

What if I also had a powerful embroidery machine and I could make quilt blocks with special designs that were unique and beautifully done and I could hook it up to a computer that my incredible husband who is always supportive of every hair brained idea I have would keep running smoothly for me because he’s just so nice like that and I would be able to turn my graphics into quilts and my sentences would never end?

What if I could become an embroidery machine dealer on the side?

What if I called my little store…”Playing With Blocks” and had a sometimes whimsical friend of mine named Tisra help me design the inside so it would welcome people with a warm and happy feeling?

What if I were able to fulfill a dream of mine in giving quilts away to people who don’t have a warm blanket and at the same time make enough money to keep from having to ask for favors or donations from people?

What if I did all that and was too busy to keep my house clean or my family fed nutritious and comforting meals?

I guess I’ll just quilt in my dining room and see what happens.

  1. I love love love the idea. I’m not a quilter, but the idea works well for the knitting store I go to- comfortable, places to chat and work on your project. many knitting stores combine the coffeeshop and yarn nicely. You could totally do it for quilting. And it would be nice to have a quilting place without the “country” aspect of quilting. (You know…hearts, country blue, gingham, geese) You could turn quilting into the next hip craft. Oooh- all the colors. The quilt fabric department at JoAnns is one of my favorites because of the color organization. Such a good idea!

  2. Tim and I had this same “hair brained” idea this last Sunday. We could open a shop in Springfield and have all the amenities you just suggested. I was so surprised to hear Tim say “let’s look into it”.

  3. OH you sound like me. I would love to open some little something. My problem is that people would have to buy things. I am not much of a salesperson. I’m really not into details either. Sounds lovely. Can I bring my drop spindle?

  4. What if you had some antique cars, and some sports stuff and a big screen TV….. Oh, well, even if you didn’t have any “man” stuff I would stop by and see it, Because if you created it it would be worth seeing.
