Everyday Life

What a day, what a very long day

I left the house at 5:50 a.m. after the deluge of hail that hit us at 5:30 and didn’t return until 4:00. Owen and I joined my sister Becky and her two daughters, my dad (who was in town for the weekend) and Andy the guy who owns the Orbit Health-food store, for a trip to Kentucky to see an iridologist. I started out very early so that we could have breakfast with Dad at Cracker Barrel and then meet the others to caravan to Vernon, KY. Vernon is hardly more than a dot on the map…it is made up of a few Amish farms mainly. One of these Amish is a guy named Reuben Schwartz who has trained in iridology. It’s very strange but seems accurate. He looks into your eyes with a magnifying glass and a little flashlight and from what he sees is able to diagnose problems you are having in the rest of your body. I know…it sounds weird and wacky but I had him look at Owen and he accurately identified some of the issues Owen has had recently. One being a lot of ongoing cold symptoms through half of December and most of January. He explained that Owen’s immune system is a little weak and then recommended several herbs I couldn’t afford. I did buy him one small bottle of rose-hips something or other and the rest of it I’m going to try to get from Andy’s store, hopefully at a better price. I can’t complain about what he charges because his products are very pure and very good…well worth the price…not to mention that he doesn’t charge to see you. He has a little cardboard box on his desk and people donate whatever they can to have him take a look at their eyeballs. The funny thing…and some of you will roll your eyes at this, but we figured out that he’s my mom’s second cousin. I should have gotten a family discount right? His grandfather is my great-grandfather’s brother. So this makes Reuben my second cousin once removed. There were people from all over waiting to see him and we have heard that people have come from all over the world to this little office in the middle of nowhere. He doesn’t even have an indoor restroom…true to Amish practice…if you gotta go…you’ll go as the Romans do, in the outhouse. Thankfully…I didn’t have to go.

Becky and Dad each walked away with bags of things to cure what ails them and Reuben gave Becky a lot of her stuff because of the high price and the great need that Grace has for some “health in her body” as he put it.

I was so glad to get home this afternoon after driving there in the rain and then not eating lunch until we got back to Becky’s I was just worn out. Owen was too. He fell asleep when we were almost home and then went straight to his crib and slept for an hour still in his jacket.

This afternoon, Kris and I tried to visit a couple in our class that had a baby last night but the poor dears were still sound asleep when we stopped in. So…maybe I’ll go by there tomorrow. She had a long ordeal and according to the nurse had some complications toward the end. She didn’t elaborate, I’m sure she’s not supposed to, so I don’t know what that means but hopefully we’ll be able to see a happy little family awake and recovering well tomorrow.

We came home to scrounge around for some dinner. I made Kris and Owen some pita sandwiches and I ate some salad. It was good and I feel satisfied. I am still being very good.

Now…Kris is playing his Monday night computer game and Owen is playing on his own…which I just love…I am catching up my blog and will soon get into some comfy pajamas and curl up in front of the computer to watch my Monday night “Tea Sipper”. That’s code for any type of old fashioned English accent talky type chick flick. I love them.

  1. I was also going to say, at makersdiet.com there’s a sample menu for one day so you can get an idea.

  2. Sounds like a very full day. I would love to be very healthy, but it really is expensive so I can relate.

  3. Please give me directions to get to see Mr. Reuben Schwartz, I have done web searches for two days and you are the closest I could find, to get the directions and address info to find him. I heard about him curing cancer on a man here in Jamestown Tennessee.

  4. Hmmmm? Healthy living is not as expensive as Medical living. We have been free from the “trust in the doctor” living for about twelve years and do not believe it is as expenxive as paying for all the drugs and the side effects.
