The Monday Theory

My theory is that people often don’t like Monday because they haven’t taken a break on Sunday. It’s just a theory and I admit that it is loose and doesn’t necessarily apply to everyone. For instance…if you really dislike your job, resting on Sunday isn’t going to make it more fun. In general though…I think I may be on to something.

Friday night after a great time hosting family and friends at the park for a birthday party for all three of our boys, Aron got sick. Looking back now, I see that he may have been suffering during the party but we didn’t know it. I should have known that when he didn’t finish eating cake because “my bewwy huwts!” that something was wrong. I just chalked it up to eating too much. I was distracted I guess. Regardless, the shrill scream in the middle of the night was my first knowledge of his illness. I remained in that knowledge through the night and into the next day. He “spilled the graham crackers” every forty minutes to an hour during that time and I felt so horrible for the little guy.

Of course I was very tired all day Saturday and really didn’t do much of anything. He napped for several hours, finally, and his stomach calmed down nicely. I didn’t nap because I knew I would probably have trouble getting up again. Sunday came and though he acted well, he had a bit of trouble on the southern end of things right before we left for church. Thank God potty training has taken a successful turn recently and he made it to the toilet. Regardless, I didn’t know if this would be a lasting issue and didn’t want to risk that on our poor nursery workers at church. So I changed out of my church clothes and he and I camped out at home while the rest of the guys went on without us.

I had done all my resting on Saturday…so I got busy. I did laundry, I washed dishes, I swept floors, I straightened and put away. I sorted, organized, threw away and otherwise managed all clutter and trash. I was on a roll. I made lunch, set the table and listened to the worship service online while I made life tidy. It was great. I did a lot of my Saturday chores and threw in some from my Monday list just to get a head start.

I thought about the fact that I usually feel that way on Monday. That fresh start feeling that motivates me and gets me going. Which is why I came up with the Monday theory.

Maybe, just maybe, if more people were resting on Sunday, if there were more sitting and enjoying, more fellowship and conversation, more stillness and observation, more singing and playing and less busy, busy, get it done before the weekend ends…Monday would be a better day for more people.

It’s just a thought.

  1. Poor Aron! I hate that for him.

Um, yeah, Sunday, rest…yesterday was not the day for that. It really wasn’t the weekend for that. We aren’t usually that busy on the weekends but this one was. I actually told Travis to take a nap yesterday…and he did. I don’t think that’s happened before. We served in kid’s church and had life group yesterday so the girls and I are taking it slowly today.

  2. Good stuff!! We have made it a point to make every Saturday our day of rest and I wouldn’t trade those days for anything!! I sometimes have to make my self chill out though and not clean etc.

  3. Well, you knew you’d get someone to argue against your theory, right?

For me, it’s just because I like things best when my teammate is with me. Mondays would be perfect if Eric and I could do them together! I really just don’t like giving him up to his company, especially since thy keep him so darn long (commutes stink!). I see a day when we work alongside one another doing something grand! Might just be a dream, but I think that would be amazing.

  4. Tisra – Regarding argument: I expect nothing less…that’s why I gave the disclaimer at the beginning. You, especially, are very good at looking at all sides of an issue. Not so much to argue I think, as to provoke further discussion and thought.

I think people have dreams for a reason Tisra. Especially the amazing ones.

And commutes do stink. From both directions. 🙂

  5. I love Aron’s picture! Poor baby couldn’t enjoy his cake. I like your theory. Mondays are good if you can grab hold and enjoy your productivity.

  6. Amy – I have weekends like that too. And I think they affect my Mondays negatively. Sometimes we can’t “just rest” because we have responsibilities (like life group and so on). I SHOULD find another day to rest in those situations…but I don’t usually. I was forced to rest on Saturday and it was good for me.

  7. Aw, yuck. The stomach flu is *the worst!*
But Mondays? I only hate them because my resting time is over. I’d rather just keep doing the fun stuff instead.
