Thanks Aunt Sue

This post is one I intended to put up quite a while back. I’ve been too busy to get it done so in the interest of keeping life in some order I will post this before I post about Owen’s birthday or my trip to Fort Wayne.

I had told my dad that I would like to have one of Reubmommy’s sewing machines and asked him who had gotten them. My aunt Mary has the beautiful treadle machine and my aunt Sue had taken the other machine. She was willing to let me have it and dad brought it down to me this last trip.

In the last picture you can see my grandma Katie’s treadle machine as a bedside table on the left and Reubmommy’s machine as a bedside table on the right. They are both Singer machines and I love the shape of those old black machines. They look somehow more feminine than the newer models. Reubmommy’s is in working order and is electric. It was the one she used most regularly so it’s a good machine. Grandma Katie’s machine had a belt that was dried out and broke when I tried to use it. I got a new belt but I do not know how to put it on, fasten it and tighten it. So I believe it works just fine but I need that one element to make it go. One day I would like to have these machines in a more prominent place, but even as bedside tables they are getting some use.

  1. Awww… just warms you heart to think of all the love those two machines got, and how they are now part of your home. Being a sewer, I know you cherish them, appreciate them, and will love them just as well (though you may not use them as often). If nothing else, they add such family history to your room that is already complete with one of the most gorgeous quilts ever. *sigh* 🙂

So glad you’re home safely. I REALLY look forward to your posts about the women’s trip!!! Quick post about them before I leave so I don’t have to wait weeks and weeks to hear how it went! 😉

  2. Very nice. They look great as night stands. I love the history and behind them as well. Tisra’s right. That’s a beautiful quilt. Did you make it?

  3. Cheryl – That is the quilt Reubmommy made for Kris and I when we got married. She made one for each of the grand-kids. We were able to pick the pattern and colors we wanted. She brought it down when she came for the wedding. It was wrapped in two brand new green bath towels that were pinned together as a gift and gift wrapping.

  4. I love those old machines. I doubt I’d use it any more than the newer one I have but they’re much nicer to look at.

I think it’s very cool to have something meaningful from your grandmothers…and that they’re functional is nice too.

  5. Mary, this room was such a pleasure to stay in, so beautiful. I love the sewing machines! Had a great time with your family again! I am so glad your trip went well.
