A Little Mystery

Have any of you ever seen one of these before?

This little tool belonged to my mother who used it very rarely to my chagrin. I remember her using it, I remember the delicate pastries it produced. I remember the powdered sugar and the hot oil and the wax paper used and I remember her saying it was too much trouble when I asked for more. But I don’t remember what it was called and I wish that I did. There were other pieces to this as well. The heart and square shape each screw off of the tines and other shapes can go on. There was a floret and something else but I don’t recall what it was. I wish I had the floret because that is the one I most distinctly remember eating. I don’t know what happened to them. Maybe they will turn up yet.

Regardless…I would love to be able to reproduce the little pastries but I don’t even remember what the tool is, let alone what the pastries might be called. How can I look up recipes that way?

If any of you have a clue…please share. I’ll make you some pastries if you solve the mystery.

  1. I think they’re “roselle”. Somethign like that. You said you’d make me pastries- I’M SO ALL OVER THAT! Tisra and pastry- seriously!- *sigh*, I am on the challenge! [runs to google and figure out]

  2. Tisra! You are awesome. This is great…there are even molds I can order if I can’t find the other two mom had. And since I have now looked at these links, I’m pretty sure the other shape she had was a star. Assuming they would fit my iron, I could order the shapes I want for about $5.00 each. So cool!

Yes, you shall have some pastries. You shall have some pastries indeed!

  3. Oooo I am glad for Tisra finding that info. I was Googling for a while but then I decided to check your comments. That is neat! How does it work? Do you press it into dough or something?

  4. I LOVE these things! My mom made them for me when I was a little girl too! As a matter of fact, I think I have a couple of the irons myself. We didn’t have a deep fryer, so we used a wok to make them. Yummy!!!

  5. Michelle – The iron is dipped into a batter and then dipped in hot oil for a crisp cookie. When it is done you sprinkle it with powdered sugar or as the recipes I’ve seen linked suggest cinnamon and sugar. The molds are what I remember, but the shapes I have pictured are actually shells. These are made the same way but then you can fill them with goodies as well. I’m thinking cream cheese and berries.

Cathy – We may have to have a Rosette party!

Dad – We did all the fun stuff while you were at work. 🙂

  6. I love this – between this and Sweet Potato biscuits, i am thinking of moving my October trip closer!!

    Thanks for sharing!
