Everyday Life

No Portrait

I was trying to get a picture of the boys together and things weren’t going well. So often when I take pictures I am going for a portrait…something I can frame but this time I just wanted to capture the three of them together. No framing, no fuss, no matching shirts, just three brothers in the same chair. Ivan just woke up from a nap, Aron was just fed and put into his second set of clothes after a blowout and Owen was trying to make the other two cooperate.

After looking through my shots, none of the pictures have that priceless, frameable quality I love to capture but this one makes me laugh. It reminds me so much of the pictures my mom took on her little Kodak camera. Instead of three sisters squeezed into the vinyl navy blue rocker it’s three brothers irritating one another in mama’s favorite beige recliner. Those pictures were always developed on that Kodak paper with the white frame around a square image and the date printed in red on one side. Some of you know what I’m talking about.

I’m so glad I can just pop my little card into the computer and send this around the world if I want. She would have had to develop them, wait several days and then if she liked one, take it back to get reprints from the negatives, wait again and then mail them to relatives across the ocean if it were necessary. Aren’t we blessed?

  1. I love it! Personally, I prefer those un-frameable candids. They show off much more personality! Already, from my limited experience, I can tell you that those photos will remind you more of who your kids were at that moment. I mean, I like portraits a lot too, but….this is the most precious kind of photo to me!

  2. That is so precious. And I love it that the photos aren’t “perfect”. I think it’s nice to have a shot of “real-life” to go with all the other perfect, faces-scrubbed, hair in place, angelic smile, frameable ones.

  3. Looking forward to seeing them tomorrow and you!

The first Father’s Day that we had Lael, I tried to get a sweet picture of all three kids because Grant had hand-crafted a beautiful frame for Daddy to take to work. Well, SAME THING. No one smiled at the same time and Lael was red-faced screaming. *That’s* the picture he got for Father’s Day because I figured that it would evoke a laugh, if nothing else. Thank goodness for digital- but even then, sometimes the subjects just won’t cooperate…no matter if you’ve got 2 frames of film or room enough for 100s of digital images! 🙂
