Furniture

I ordered bunk beds today. The USA Baby located in Franklin is having a sale tomorrow that includes 45% off some nice beds we can use for the boys. I was impressed with the whole store and their staff and really enjoyed looking at all their baby stuff. When I walked in last week, Donna, one of the sales reps, asked if there was something we were looking for. Upon hearing bunk beds she said, “Do you want to see my favorite?” in such an excited tone I totally believed she wished she had a reason to buy them for herself. They are nice and I think we are going to like them for a long time. We opted for the tri-bunk extension making this a three man set up. I figured since we know we are having another boy, we might as well make room for him. The boys are close enough in age that I don’t see any of them desiring their own room for a long time and once the youngest is ready, we’ll move him in with his big brothers. When they do want their own rooms we have three twin beds we can use in separate rooms. In the meantime Owen has declared the third bed to belong to Hope, his cousin, who spends the night from time to time. I don’t know how well that would fly but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. We did not order the under bed storage or the matching dressers and desks and assorted other goodies. Just the bare bones beds for now. I’m not picky about matchy matchy, especially for kids rooms. I’m almost embarrassed to buy new furniture at all. I always look at my own childhood and think, used furniture was good enough for me, why spend the money on new stuff? However, the bunk beds I had as a kid were sturdy and solid, unlike any of the used stuff I’ve seen thus far. I think used furniture is different than it used to be because much of the new furniture is different than it used to be. Stuff just doesn’t last as long. I’m hoping that our “new” purchase will be a good investment however, and will indeed last the boys for a long, long time.

The nursery is nearly bear and waiting for some furniture of it’s own. Once we get the bunk beds we will transition Ivan out of the crib and remove it from their room soon after. I found out that I could convert one of my Eames-Herman Miller fiberglass shell chairs into a rocker by buying a base for it. Won’t that be cool? I got these chairs for a steal and have enjoyed having them but never have felt like they were put to use as well as they could be. Such a selective and specific style is hard to match with our other “good deals” around the house. Here’s a rendering of what the rocker will look like to the left. I think it will make a nice addition to the brightly colored nursery we are planning. I ordered the base for it today as well and my next step is to go buy paint. I won’t be painting the entire room and I honestly don’t know how it’s all going to take shape yet. I don’t really like diving in without a full picture, but the basics are all that’s necessary and I know that as the room progresses I’ll see what to do next.

So, that’s the furniture update for the weekend. I will be sorting fabric tomorrow, armed with Tisra’s words of advice and a telephone number for Amber’s organizer friend handy if I can’t quite get stuff to the trash.

  1. I love the bunk beds! I’m so glad you got hte extention because I think the boys are going to love it. The rocker for the Eams chair is great too. I’m sure that whatever you decide to do will turn out just fine.

  2. I’ve always loved those chairs- and how cool is this?! I’m sure the bunk beds will be as much a hit as ours are- and we don’t have *three* beds. I mean, THREE beds is REALLY COOL. 🙂

  3. Love the bunk beds! I think the boys will really enjoy them as well. As you know, Madison has bunk beds, but has no siblings to share them with. The fun part for her is deciding each night which bunk to sleep in 🙂 All kids need to experience bunk beds at some time or another. They’re awesome!

  4. I LOVE those bunk beds!! I saw them about a month ago when I went there to buy a new swing (did you go into the back of the store?)…we walked around and saw those bunk beds and the boys loved them too!
oh and the swing I got to replace the baby swing is too short! i have to go back..that is why there are only 2 swings up now. They were so disappointed when it was too short, hayden, owen and jackson were all going to swing together!
