Me and My Calico Dreams

We had snow again this morning. Not a lot but it left a little bit of white on roof tops and flower beds.

Last night I finished a project…well almost finished. I still have 9 little knots to put into it but that will only take a minute. I finished the hardest part of one of the baby blankets I’m making. that’s three down and one more to do. I really wish that I could quilt these little blankets but it would take way too much time and these babies would be all grown up before I could get it to them. One thing I’ve thought about, which I never would have considered before, is a new machine. Not just a new sewing machine but a machine that does embroidery and quilting as well as regular sewing. I’ve never been a fan of machine quilting but quite some time ago I was introduced to a machine that does embroidery and quilting for small projects (like the baby blankets I’ve been doing) and it looks like hand stitching. That’s the thing I’ve never liked about machine quilting…the stitches are right on top of each other while hand quilting is the simple up and down stitching that creates spaces between and has that wonderful imperfect look about it. A machine like this would be a huge investment and I don’t expect to have one anytime soon. I am just now beginning to see the advantages of it though and could see myself making good use of it.

I still have 6 projects in the works including the ever present full size quilt. What I would like to do is begin piecing another quilt so that as soon as this one is completely quilted I have another one ready to put in the frame. I think what I want to do is a quilt that isn’t so much pieced as it is just wide strips of two colors like red and white. Then I would create appeal to the quilt with decorative stitching and make something that looks simple but has a lot of detail. We’ll see. I’d like to have something different to put on our bed so I may create something for that. I love the quilt that Reubmummy gave us but I don’t want to wear it out either. Every time we wash the thing it gets a little more worn looking. It would be nice to have an alternating set of seasonal covers for our bed. Something a little more spring/summerish would be nice.

Brent and Henry were here again last night for another rehearsal. It went well and I’m looking forward to Ohio. It was brought up that we could bring Owen with us. I’m just not sure how I feel about that. Amy Button has graciously offered to keep him for me on Friday while Kris is at work so I have options. I love the idea of having him there because it would be a lot of fun for him and Peirce to play together and of course I just love having him around. But what about sleeping and hotel rooms and naps and that sort of thing? I just don’t know if I would be able to do the job I’m going there to do if I’m thinking about Owen. I have a little while to decide.
