Picking Up Where We Left Off

Right before leaving for Michigan I got an e-mail from a friend from college. She and her family were planning to visit the Nashville area and she was hoping I would be in town. Thankfully, for this circumstance, my trip would end and bring me back before she had to leave.

On Thursday she called and we made plans for her to come by the house.

Jennifer is how I knew her in college, but after moving to New York and New Jersey she has gone by a different name. Something much more suitable to her personality and giftings. She is Sofia now, but I still haven’t caught on.

The last time we saw each other we were both pregnant with little boys. My first pregnancy and her last. Owen and Felix are just under 2 months apart in age and hit it off immediately. He has a quiet demeanor but melded into the play of my boys instantly.

Kris had to go to a meeting at church that evening so we two moms and four boys were on our own and pulled out all the fun we could find lying around. The friends Jay and Sophia were staying with in Franklin have two boys and were looking forward to a birthday for one of them the following day. So we made the cupcakes and she carted them back to surprise him the next day at school. She brought a cookie mix with her as well and we borrowed (Thank you Bobbie Jo) and improvised on missing ingredients (I had just got back from out of town you remember) and then went crazy adding M&M’s, Oreo bits and chocolate chips to the already naughty little treats.

We baked and talked and laughed and it felt just as if she had never left and we were just hanging out as we did years ago.

The boys nearly cried when she took Felix away and I talked with her on the phone to see if Kris could bring him back for an overnight stay the following afternoon. They were all for it and the boys were ecstatic.

On Friday night, they watched a movie together and played themselves to exhaustion. Felix took full advantage of the space and toys and stairwells and walkie talkies and brothers. He followed some and led some and by late Saturday morning, when all the little personalities were starting to get a little tired, I took them up the hill for ice cream. We came back for lunch and naps and all was well.

Jennifer, I mean Sofia, returned for her boy and I encouraged her to stay for dinner again, which she did. It was a good day. A good visit and I’m so glad our boys were able to meet and play. I’m hoping I can get Owen to send a letter to Felix and begin some interaction via the old fashioned pen pal method.

And for me…I felt good. Another reunion. Short and sweet.

  1. You’ve had quite the summer, haven’t you? I think it’s great…especially since we all have to be back in a routine again.
