A Smug Man

A smug man named David C. Doward,
Made sure that his suits were high powered.
He was well known at work,
As the consummate jerk,
And at home as the double-dyed coward.

I got that name off an ad on the newly delivered Real Yellow Pages. I changed it a little just in case someone does a search for this poor man and finds my less than complimentary limerick. I based my limerick on the character I precariously judged from his picture. I just didn’t like his face. He’s a lawyer of course…social security, disability claims, personal injury…literally sporting an “AS SEEN ON TV” box right beside his mug. He’s just asking me to think little of him isn’t he?

I have had a great time sharing Ivan’s blog with friends and family. In case I didn’t personally send it to you, check out the link. He’s a classic.

“Weird Stuff” is where I would have to file this little bit of nonsense. I was reading a blog that I was connected to from Christy’s blog. I got all caught up in this love story she was telling and read all the way through it over about 4 days. She told how her new husband and his friends sacrificed watching and attending a big football game on the day of their wedding. Okay…moving from random to weird…today I took the boys to O’Charley’s for lunch and as we’re waiting to be seated I look up over the bar and there is a football game on the TV. Figuring this must be a classic game, given the current season isn’t football season, I took note of the teams and in very little time realized this was the exact game I had read about in the story. Teams that I have never paid attention to, (I had to look up the initials in her story because I didn’t know who ASU was right off the bat) and now I’ve heard of this particular match-up twice in the span of a week. Does anyone else think that’s uncanny? If “uncanny” is a word, why isn’t “canny” a word? Okay…I just looked it up and actually it is a word, but it’s not the opposite of uncanny which is…well…uncanny.

A friend of mine had a baby yesterday morning. I found out in the afternoon that he was moved to the NICU because of a respiratory issue. Please pray for this little family. It’s a rough road they are on. Though the issue doesn’t seem to be serious, they aren’t sure why there is an issue and the waiting and worrying is difficult to bear. This is their first child and he is a beauty, but until they are sure what is causing him problems, mama must observe teary eyed as her little man is covered in tape and wires. I visited with her yesterday and have spoken to her on the phone twice this morning. She got my sympathy and then my sermon (I’m not a big advocate of self-pity and I’ve been in her shoes) and she took it well. She is getting a crash course in loving hands-free. I encouraged her that she will be miles ahead of many parents when this is over. How many of us are still learning to give our little ones to God and trust Him to love them more than we do?

  1. I judge people like your lawyer from afar, too. I hate that I do it, but I sure do. I have entire conversations with them sometimes – you know, in my head. Sometimes I have them out loud and my husband thinks it’s pretty funny. Or at least, he chuckles uncomfortably.
I love the Pioneer Woman’s love story! I’m so glad you got caught up in it too. I think she’s hilarious – just lots of fun to read.
Will be praying for this family. I can’t imagine.

  2. you are so funny Mary, and then so wise just a line or two later!
What does the 41 mean at the bottom of your post?
