It’s been a good weekend. We’ve been running around some, enjoying staying home some and eating a lot.
We had a good time on Friday with Madison and then with Chloe and Halle. Friday night the kids all got to stay up very late watching a movie and Kris and I were watching them through the windows out on the back porch which was much quieter. I think we all slept pretty well and Saturday morning we were able to leisurely get up and ready to go out for breakfast. We met Travis and Amy at The Pfunky Griddle in Berry Hill. It was interesting. I think I’d enjoy it more in the winter. The griddle heats up your table and area so much I was a little sticky by the time we were done. And it wasn’t from the pancake syrup. My French Toast was very good and the kids had a good time…it was just too hot. It did make me want to get a griddle though. My mom always had one, and I never have really felt like I needed one, but they are certainly convenient.
We went home and rested a while and then dad and Kris and I took the boys to the greenway for a walk. This time we went to the Kholl’s Trail-head and it was a mess. The river had been so high that the trail and about 6 feet up the hills and tree trunks were covered with a layer of brown dusty dirt. It literally would have been over my head at the highest stage of flooding. The whole area smelled like dead fish and it was pretty muggy out there. It was fun to get out, see the river, run with the boys and get some exercise, but it was not the most pleasant place to be. You can see in some of the pictures where the brown meets the green and how high the river got. You may also notice that I finally got Owen and Ivan haircuts.
After the greenway we stopped for a cool treat at Rita’s Ice Custard Happiness.
Sunday we were pleased to find that Gov. Huckabee still knows how to bring a sermon. The room was packed both Saturday night and Sunday morning as our church presented it’s annual Memorial Day Celebration. Kris and Dad and I were in the very last row in the tiered seating. The music and presentation on America’s history in war was moving and well done. Gov. Huckabee spoke and challenged the crowd to forgo pleasing the world or even ourselves, but rather to present ourselves to God as soldiers who are focused on the success of the one who called us to serve. It was a good morning.
I had lunch nearly ready in the crockpot when we got home and after eating I rushed out to a baby shower for a girl from church. It was a pleasant afternoon and I was able to meet some girls I had only known from a distance before. The rest of the day was peaceful and simple. Just the way I like it.
Yesterday, we had planned to go up to Becky and Bobby’s for the day, but due to a couple of unforeseen hurdles, we invited them to our house instead. It was nice to have the covered porch during the occasional showers that surprised us now and then. The kids always play hard and loud and I even got to play a little catch with my nephew out front. We had burgers and hot dogs, baked beans, potato salad and lots of homemade pie and ice cream. We were exhausted by the time things were winding down and ready to get cleaned up and lay down. It was a good day…a good weekend…and I am pretty sure I’m looking at a good week.
It all sounds so lovely, and those boys of yours are so dashing 🙂 Love the pictures.
the pictures are great!
The pictures with the mud dust are so strange- it’s like there’s a sepia wash over the bottom half! I can’t imagine the flooding being so high! Crazy. Cute boys make it all seem natural. “What mud?! Keep your eyes on the adorableness!” 🙂
Your Memorial Day weekend sounds so relaxing and fun. You certainly got a dose of girl, didn’t you?!
Tisra – I thought too that the pictures looked somehow altered. As if we had messed with tones and colors. I promise nothing was changed. I thought later looking at the airbrushed line between green and brown, that it sort of looks like Spring is descending onto fall. Honestly, it looks much better in the pictures than it appeared in real life…maybe because you can’t smell the dead fish. 🙂
By the way everyone…Kris took all the pictures. I don’t want to take credit for his good eye.
It looks like a very nice weekend! Our greenway here in FW takes on plenty plenty extra water at times too. Your pictures looked like they could have easily been taken here. Sadly, I know the fishy dirty smell all too well. It sure makes you appreciate clean water and no floods.
Love that picture of Owen! I can hardly believe it flooded that much! Although I was here and it was a *lot* of rain. I’m not sure I could have kept walking with the dead fish smell.
