For Spec

This week’s limerick came by request. Amber is putting together a memory book of sorts for her family and it will contain a lot of nice things about her great-grandmother known affectionately as Spec.

From Amber’s descriptions over the years I think we would have all enjoyed meeting Spec. At 99 years she has remained sharp as a tack and full of the personality that far outweighs her tiny stature. Unfortunately her little body is giving way to the natural decline the years bring and as Amber watches from a distance she is forced to think about saying goodbye.

She asked me to pen a limerick in honor of Spec that would accompany some pictures in her book, so in hopes of bringing a chuckle through some tears I give you Spec’s limerick.

A dear little lady called Spec,
Kept her hair and her family in check.
She felt the world jaded,
If her lipstick were faded,
And she drove like a bat out of heck.

I will never forget Amber’s account of going to lunch with Spec. With her great-grandmother at the wheel Amber realized that safety was not high on the priority list…lipstick, and speed seemed to rule the day. And if I remember right it was a sporty Jaguar that was Spec’s chariot of choice. Maybe Amber can write about that one.
