Tales of Yesterday

Yesterday morning I went to our freezer in the garage to get some milk. When I opened the door I found that dreaded picture no one wants to see when they open a freezer. Things were melting. I quickly realized that the freezer was fine, but the door had been left open. I had placed a gallon jug of milk in there on Thursday and noticed that it closed hard. I checked it though and it was closed completely. On Sunday I pulled out a box of bread sticks to go with our spaghetti and in my rush closed the door as usual without checking it. I had forgotten about the Thursday incident. I am pretty sure that is the last time I got into the freezer until yesterday. So, for nearly two days the freezer door was open about a centimeter.

In this freezer we keep meat. Lots and lots of meat. My dad butchers and gives us meat for Christmas. I was horrified, stupefied, and petrified. I called Kris so that I could freak him out just before going into a meeting. What was I thinking? Oh yeah, I wasn’t.

After boiling the rescue team down to ME I found some logic and began the process of figuring out what to do. I found that everything in the door was completely thawed and probably a loss. Everything in the very front of the freezer was partially thawed and could be saved if someone wanted to take it and use it very soon. There was a lot of corn in this freezer too so add a green vegetable and you’ve got a meal, right? So I made a few phone calls and distributed beef to the community around us. My sister, Becky, took most of it. A neighbor and a couple from Sunday school dropped in and picked up a couple roasts and I cleaned up my freezer. I still have a two pound package of hamburger in the fridge that I need to use soon. I may just make some meatballs and then freeze those for later. We don’t need dinner at home for the next two nights.

The rest of the freezer seems to have stayed frozen solid and I’m so grateful. I imagine that several hundred dollars worth of beef and corn would have been lost.

  1. Good save! Glad there wasn’t more lost. By the way…I really like the foyer table. If you don’t point out any imperfections, the rest of us don’t notice them at all. It looks good!

  2. Oh man. The thought of that potential loss makes the Scottish part of me cringe. Good job on pulling together a valiant rescue 🙂
