One Day at Dad’s

We arrived in Michigan very late last night and slept pretty well after our long journey. The boys did really well. Ivan actually rode with his cousins for a good portion of the trip while we were accompanied by Hope and Landis each at different times.
When we got here, one of the first things I noticed was this toy sitting in dad’s kitchen. I let the boys pull it out today and play with it. It is a simple little toy, handmade, probably by one of my great-grandfathers. I don’t know where it came from originally but it has been at my grandmother’s (Reubmommy’s) house as long as I can remember. She says it used to sit at her grandmother’s house (I believe I heard that right but will double check on Sunday when I see her).
It has occupied them for good part of the day and as I remember it, used to be mesmerizing for me as a child. The sound it makes, the clever design and the simplicity that allows you to make up your own little games as you play, all make for a perfect toy.
I think that dad is going to try to recreate it in metal (him being the welder and all) so we’ll see what happens there.

In other news, I had a relaxing day here at the house. Dad left around 3:00 to join Bobby and Becky for a concert up in Delton, MI and won’t be back until late tonight. I stopped in at my sister Kathy’s house and then met my brother for dinner at a Mexican place in Sturgis. We just returned and the boys are a little bit wired. I need them to go to bed soon so that I can relax. They seem more rambunctious than usual and I know it’s a combination of things, not the least of which is the fact that their daddy is still in Tennessee. Little boys get a little more rowdy when they miss their daddy I think.

It is bedtime in Nashville so I am going to close this up and wash their dirty little selves and put them to bed. It’s been a nice day and though the weather didn’t allow us much outdoor time today, it is beautiful sitting beside the open window right now with the sun going down and the frogs and crickets taking up their evening songs.

  1. Sounds PERFECT. So glad you’re enjoying family and the simplicity of the transition from spring to summer.

  2. It sounds like a great trip. I love the little toy. It’s so sweet in it’s simplicity and has sentimental value to boot.
